Health and Safety Policy: Preparation & Installation of Resin Bound Gravel Driveways and Paths

1. Policy Statement
HPM Groundwork’s and Surfacing Limited is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all employees, contractors, clients, and the public during the preparation and installation of resin bound gravel driveways and paths. We strive to prevent accidents, injuries, and ill health by adhering to all relevant legislation and best practices.

2. Responsibilities
- Management: Responsible for implementing, maintaining, and reviewing health and safety procedures. Ensures all staff are trained and equipped for safe working.
- Employees: Must follow all health and safety instructions, use PPE as required, and report hazards or incidents immediately.
- Subcontractors: Required to comply with HPM’s health and safety standards and site rules.

3. Risk Assessment
Prior to starting any project, a risk assessment will be conducted to identify potential hazards, including but not limited to:
- Manual handling of heavy materials
- Use of machinery and tools (mixers, compactors, etc.)
- Exposure to chemicals (resins, hardeners, cleaning agents)
- Slips, trips, and falls on uneven or wet surfaces
- Noise and dust exposure
Control measures will be implemented to minimize risks, and method statements will be provided for all key activities.

4. Safe Working Practices
- Site Preparation: Clearly mark and secure the work area to prevent unauthorized access. Check for underground services before excavation.
- Manual Handling: Use correct lifting techniques and mechanical aids where possible. Team lifting for heavy or awkward loads.
- Machinery & Tools: Only trained personnel to operate machinery. Regularly inspect and maintain equipment.
- Chemical Safety: Store resins and hardeners securely and handle according to COSHH guidelines. Use gloves, eye protection, and respiratory PPE as required.
- Surface Preparation & Laying: Maintain good housekeeping to avoid slips and trips. Ensure adequate ventilation when working with chemicals.

5. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
All staff and subcontractors must wear appropriate PPE, including:
- High-visibility clothing
- Safety boots
- Gloves (chemical-resistant when handling resins)
- Eye protection
- Dust masks or respirators (when cutting, mixing, or working with chemicals)

6. Emergency Procedures
- First aid kits are available on all sites and staff are aware of their location.
- Emergency contact numbers are displayed on site.
- All accidents, injuries, and near misses must be reported and recorded.
- Fire extinguishers are available and staff are trained in their use.

7. Environmental Considerations
- Prevent contamination of drains and watercourses by containing run-off and spills.
- Dispose of waste materials responsibly in accordance with regulations.

8. Training & Communication
- All employees receive health and safety induction and task-specific training.
- Toolbox talks are held regularly to reinforce safe practices.
- Policy is reviewed annually and updated as needed.
